Women's Cricket

There are women's cricket teams around the world, mostly in countries where men's cricket is also popular. In England there is a regional cricket league similar to men's county cricket but limited to T20 and T50 fixtures. The teams are:

Central Sparks Loughborough
Lightning
North West
Lancashire Thunder
Northern Diamonds South East Stars

Southern Vipers Sunrisers Surrey Stars Western Storm Yorkshire Diamonds

There is no international Test championship for women's cricket but there are a few one-off test matches. Most games are ODI (One Day International) games among Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
The England National Cricket Team members are drawn from the various regional women's teams. See current squad list. They have numerous fixtures for the 2024 season. They have some of the top players in women's cricket. Sophie Ecclestone (who plays for North West Thunder) is the number one women's bowler in the world and Amy Jones, the team's wicket keeper, (who plays for Central Sparks) is considered one of the best keepers playing. Below is their fixture list for the 2024 season and the 2025 Ashes (with the winner indicated in red).

West Indies cricket

Various countries in the Caribbean (mostly islands) have cricket teams and comprise West Indies cricket. There are two different leagues: Premier League and First-class cricket, and they are not comprised of the same countries.

Six national teams play First-class cricket toward the West Indies Championship: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, the Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands. Barbados are the defending champions. They also compete in the Super50 Cup (T50) championship. Trinidad and Tobago are the defending champions. (These national teams are not to be confused with the West Indies team that plays International Test cricket. That team is comprised of players from the various West Indies countries and will play three test matches against England in March, 2022. They also play international T20 games.)

Six teams play Premier League Twenty20 cricket toward the Caribbean Premier League tournament: Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, Saint Lucia Kings, and Trinbago (Trinidad and Tobago) Knight Riders. Trinbago Knight Riders are the defending champions.

Ice Cricket!

In 2018, in St. Moritz, Switzerland, an ice cricket match was held on frozen Lake St. Moritz. The playing field was packed snow rather than ice which would have made play difficult and possibly dangerous. Apparently, the only exception to the regulation cricket rules was to allow the fielders to wear gloves for warmth (rather than for protection).

It was a T20 match between Team Royal comprised of players from England, Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand, and the Badrutt's Palace Diamonds players came from India, Sri Lanka, Australia and the West Indies. And these were not just any players — they came from the countries' nation teams. They played two matches and Team Royal won both.

Cricket bat

Cricket bats are made of two types of wood: the handle is a composite of laminated cane and wood that is spliced into the main striking blade usually made of willow. (The blade must be made of wood.) This is a particular species of white willow (Salix alba v. caerulea) called, fittingly, cricket bat willow. This variety of willow has the distinct properties of being tough but very light which makes it the ideal material for such a large blade.

Bats can be no more than 38 inches long, and the blade no more than 4¼ inches wide. The weight is usually between 2lb 7oz and 3lb (1.2 to 1.4 kg), though there is no specified weight.

WikiHow has detailed information on cricket bat maintenance.

The major commercial bat manufacturers are Gray Nichols, Gunn & Moore, Kookaburra, Slazenger, Salix, Sanspareils Greenlands, and Spartan.
