Cricket is a very old game; the earliest reference to it is from 1597. It began in England and has spread all over the world making it one of the most widely played and watched sports in the world, second only to football (soccer). It spread around the world in, what were at the time, British colonies. So, it is popular today in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe and many islands of the Caribbean (who in international matches play collectively as the "West Indies").
The one exception is Canada, where it was very popular in the 19th century but lost out to baseball as the more popular sport (though there is a Canadian national cricket team). Also, oddly, cricket is popular in Holland, and they have a national team that plays in world class tournaments.
I played on the Kingston & District Cricket Club (K.D.C.C.) from 1995-99. I was team treasurer from 1996-99. I won the "Most improved player" award in 1996. The team disbanded due to lack of members for the 2000 season.
There is again a Kingston Cricket Club team playing under the Ottawa Valley Cricket Council. They play at the old Kingston Memorial Centre grounds. They also have a Facebook page.
